A Most Heinous Violation

Another entry where there will be very little humour.

I just read this story in the London Free Press.

There has been a huge hulabaloo in London over a new methadone clinic spearheaded by a university student named Marsha,  whom didn’t want her last name used but didn’t mind having her picture splattered across the pages of a well read daily newspaper.   Proof that you don’t have to be smart to go to university.

These people are complaining about “the criminal element” that methadone clinics bring with them.    There is no evidence of this and I’m willing to bet that they are basing all their fear on reports of drug dealers hanging around the methadone clinic at 527 Dundas.   The dealers aren’t hanging around the methadone clinic…..they’re hanging around the “Coffee House” drop in center next door.

Now, if you read the past stories you’ll see that Marsha did not discover the methadone clinic by noticing a whole bunch of drug dealers hanging around her neighbourhood,  she went in and asked what the pharmacy was doing as they had very little stock.

You can read about it at lfpress.com.

The thing that made me mad are that protestors are photographing patients coming and going from the methadone clinic so that if something bad happens “they know who the culprits are”.

This behaviour is a disgusting display of ignorance and a repugnant violation of these people’s dignity and rights.    There is no evidence that they are criminals simply because they are using methadone,  yet Marsha and her band of ignorant dipwads treat them as such.

Here are some important points:

#1:  Lots of people who aren’t criminals use methadone.   They’re ordinary folks who had the misfortune of needing strong pain meds, and were prescribed oxycontin or some other opiate and ended up getting addicted.

#2:  People on methadone ARE TRYING TO GET BETTER!

#3:  It is a RIGHT in our society that people going about their business and not bothering anyone have a right to dignity and privacy!

#4:  People accessing healthcare have a right to privacy

Of course there has to be some part of Marsha’s brain that is telling her she’s being a blithering idiot…after all,  if you’re on the side of the angels…. why not tell everyone your name?    It can’t be because you’re worried about your safety…because everyone knows what you look like.
